The 15-member Indian team for the World Test Championships final has been announced. The team is:

Virat Kohli (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkye Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant, Wriddhiman Saha, R. Ashwin, R. Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj.

Interestingly, openers Mayank Agarwal and K L Rahul have not found a place in the team and the selectors have preferred to go with the in-form Gill and Rohit Sharma, the one batsman who can turn a game on its head on a given day. Ravindra Jadeja makes a comeback after a long layoff due to injury. The other players in the team select themselves.

Since India has 6 batsmen, 2 wicket-keeper batsmen, 2 spinners who are all-rounders and 5 pace bowlers, it will be interesting to watch the final combination. Will India go with 5 batsmen, one wicketkeeper batsman, one spinner who is also an allrounder and 4 pace bowlers? Or will it go with 6 batsmen and three pace bowlers? Or both the all rounders will be played with only 3 pace bowlers?

New Zealand is in great form and have also played two tests in England recently as preparation for the WTC final. In that sense, they have an upper hand. Rookie Devon Conway has shown that their bench strength is in no way inferior to that of India. It will be a headache for India to select the right combination.

One thinks that in the end India will go for Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kolhi, Ajinkye Rahane, Rishabh Pant, R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma. The only change in this could be if Hanuma Vihari is taken as an additional batsman. Then, either Ashwin or Jadeja will be dropped.
